Updates for Michigan LLPC from Lara

I attended a MMHCA supervisors meeting today (3/15/23) and there is a large list of changes that the Board of Counseling is proposing to be pushed through. Below is a link to the complete rules with proposed changes. These changes are not finalized yet, but looks like they will all be shortly. Here are the highlights that can affect you, as a Limited License Counselor (soon to return to Limited License Professional Counselor):

  • Everyone agrees that the change to Limited License Counselor, "LLC" is ridiculous (although, apparently the limited license in Michigan has been referred to as “LLC” since the adaptation of our bylaws in 1985). It is proposed to return to using LLPC! Hurray!

  • 100% of supervision will be able to be completed virtually. Again, HURRAY!

  • The board will begin looking for LLPCs to have "continuous supervision" throughout their LLPC experience and will audit LLPCs who have lapses. We need a definition of what "continuous" means to to the board, more details to come.

  • (this DOES NOT affect LLPCs since you've completed school already, but just good info to know) Education requirements to apply for LLPC are increasing in June 2023. 60 hours of education from a CACREP program will be needed (vs. requirement for those who graduated prior to June 2023 is only 48 graduate education hours)

I'm glad there is finally some transparency with MMCHA (I'd recommend joining if you're able to). More updates to come I am sure!
